Winter Skincare Tips: four easy tips to keep your skin happy and bright all winter long. Woman in knitted hat and scarf in the snow

It's winter time!
Brrr....did that just make you reach for a blanket? If so, I don't blame you!
While your skin spends the next few months hiding under many layers of cozy coats, sweaters, blankets and more, it can be easy to neglect it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who laments leaving the hot shower and stepping back into the cold early morning bedroom. I can dress in record speed on a cold winter morning, and if you're like me, it can be real easy to forgo a skincare routine for the sake of comfort.

Today, I'm sharing a few easy ways you can take care of your skin this winter without too much time shivering in your cold, early morning bedroom.

❄Winter Skin Care Tip No. 1: Exfoliate❄
One thing that's important all year long- including winter- is exfoliation. You want to get rid of those dead skin cells and keep your skin smooth & bright. Yes, even if it's hiding under a layer or two of clothing, keep it at it's best to reduce dryness, buildup and promote smoothness.

The nice thing about exfoliation is that it happens in the nice, hot shower. (Ahhh, hot shower, how I love thee!). Our Whipped Body Scrubs are a great option for exfoliation and they are a powerhouse for your skin overall: they also cleanse with a fluffy whipped soap base and they moisturize with nourishing botanical extracts and a non greasy amount of oils. That's 3 ways this product will help you care for your skin!
You'll want to exfoliate once or twice a week, and especially before you shave. (IF you bother shaving in the winter!)

❄Winter Skin Care Tip No. 2: Take care of those lips!❄

The cold winter air can deliver a beating to our lips, leaving them dry, cracked and rough. And, with the norm of wearing masks all day long nowadays, we can tend to neglect our lips because no one can see them anyway.

Our Lip Balms are crafted with a blend of oils and beeswax to keep your lips moisturized and soft. Apply to your lips after you wash your face or take a shower, and every few hours as necessary, to keep your lips happy & soft.

And, our first tip goes for your lips, too! Exfoliate your lips once or twice a week to remove dead and dry skin. There are lots of great lip scrubs on the market- but you can also easily DIY one.

Here's a favorite recipe of mine:
  •  1tsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp honey
Mix together, apply to lips liberally & scrub gently. Leave it on for a few minutes as a lip mask, then rinse (or lick 😉) it off. Follow it up with your favorite Bright Day lip balm. Bonus tip: do it at night and your lips with be extra soft and smooth in the morning!

❄Winter Skin Care Tip No. 3: Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!❄

🙋‍♀️Raise your hand if your skin gets so dry it cracks & bleeds in the winter. Mine does- especially on my knuckles 👊 and it is no fun!

The key to keeping your skin nourished in the winter is two fold: hydrate & moisturize. They are two different things, but today we are focusing on moisturizing your skin. This is where you use a product that helps create a barrier between your skin and the outside world so that your skin doesn't dry out and create misery for you.

Our Whipped Body Butters are GREAT for moisturizing. Made with avocado butter, rosehip seed oil, botanical extracts and vitamin E, they pack a big punch of vitamins and amino acids for your skin while also locking in that moisture.

I always recommend using your body butter immediately after a bath or shower. You just hydrated your skin - now lock in all that moisture for the day!

This formula is NOT overly greasy, it absorbs quickly and a little bit goes a long way. I suggest you stay in your cozy, steamy bathroom for just a few minutes after your shower to apply the body butter and let it soak in for a minute or two. Then you can head into that chilly bedroom and set the record for fastest dresser, knowing you have already cared for your skin!

If you're looking for a super treat for your skin and you prefer a product scented in only essential oils, try a fabulous new Body Oil from the Bright Naturals Collection.
.
Featuring a powerhouse blend of argan oil, jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil and FIVE botanical extracts (sunflower, aloe, calendula, irish moss and marshmallow extracts), these body oils are a quick way to nourish your skin for all-day moisturization while still being a light, fast absorbing formula. They are available in 3 essential oil scents: Sweet Orange, Lavender, and Peppermint.
.
How do you use them? There are so many ways! Here are my favorite:
  • Apply to wet skin after showering. Rub in, then towel off gently for ultra soft skin
  • Apply to clean, dry skin for a full strength boost of moisturization (a little goes a long way!)
  • Use as a massage oil
  • Add a little bit to your bath water for a decadent soak! (Use caution- surfaces may be slippery after use)

❄Winter Skin Care Tip No. 4: Say Yes to SPF!❄
.
Just because it isn't summer doesn't mean you don't need to worry about sun protection. If you're going to be outside during the winter months - skiing, sledding, building snowmen or just walking your dog in between rain storms, it's necessary to protect your skin from the sun's damaging rays (yes, they stuck around even though the heat headed south!).
.
At Bright Day Bath & Body, we do not sell products with SPF because it is a lengthy process to create an effective and reliable formula and have it approved by the FDA, but this tip is still here because it is so important! For your time outside, find yourself a good facial moisturizer and lip balm with SPF 15 or greater (preferably 30). If you are in a mild enough environment to have other areas of your skin exposed, make sure to use a sun protection cream like you would in the summer.
.
And beware of any holistic sun protection products - natural SPF elements in a product can vary wildly in their potency and efficacy. Your best bet is to go with a formula you know has been tested & approved by the FDA.

Use a face cream & lip balm with SPF 15 or greater if you're going outdoors for an extended period of time.
